THE FORGOTTEN ONES (Book One) by Laura Howard

About “The Forgotten Ones: Book 1 (The Danaan Trilogy)“ Allison O’Malley’s plan is to go to grad school so she can get a good job and take care of her schizophrenic mother. She has carefully closed herself off from everything else, including a relationship with Ethan, who she’s been in love with for as long as she can remember. What is definitely not part of the plan is the return of her long-lost father, who claims he can bring Allison’s mother back from the dark place her mind has gone. Allison doesn’t trust her father, so why would she believe his fairy tale about a long forgotten Irish people, the Tuatha de Danaan? But truths have a way of revealing themselves. Secrets will eventually surface. And Allison must learn to set aside her plan and wo...

What My Children Taught Me About Persistence

A guest post by Steven Remington. My two year old daughter stands at my feet while I am speaking on the phone and repeatedly says, “Dad… dad, dad, daddy, dad,” until I am frustrated enough I finally burst out, “What??” All parents have been in this situation. It could be a person you’re talking to at home, or the lady at the check-out line, but your child persists on getting the attention they feel they are entitled to by wearing out your name. But the child usually gets what they want — your attention! Eventually we succumb to their needs, and rightly so. Although we eventually teach them manners and the proper way to get our attention (hopefully), as adults we are trained naturally to be in tune with the needs of our children. One way to understand is to answer the distress call… their a...

THE KRAKEN: PART I by Jonas Cobos

About “The Kraken: Part 1“ Where other authors give us the trappings of steampunk without real substance, Jonas Cobos infuses his world thoroughly with the substance and spirit of the genre, 110% full of steampunk ideas and motivations. And he did something few other writers have done…made steampunk goggles actually functional tools rather than mere fashion statements. Ralph E. Vaughan _________________________ After reading this, I felt I definitely got a tempting taste of what Cobos has to offer as an author, and I can’t wait to see where this series heads next. Whatever the destination, I’m definitely on board for the journey. Highly recommended. Sam G. _________________________ People that have enjoyed the work of Jules Verne or H.G.Wells will take to Jona...

HIS CAPTIVE PRINCESS by Sandra Jones

About “His Captive Princess“ Earned respect is sweet…but deserved revenge is sweeter. Warren de Tracy was assured the Welsh village of Dinefwr would be an easy conquest, as would the widow of its fallen prince. Wedding her will appease the locals and win the respect of his liege, the usurper King Stephen. Instead, Warren is ambushed, taken prisoner by a hooded Welshwoman with skin that glows like moonlight. If he must die at her hands, at least his honorable death will silence the whispers of disloyalty hanging over his name. Princess Eleri has never seen a knight as stoic—and as eager to die—as Warren. She’d love to oblige the bastard, but something in his ocean-blue eyes stays her hand. Plus, suspicion nags at her, for the arrows that wounded him and killed his men are Norman...

Finding that Happy Ending

More and more, as a reader, I find myself searching for something new. This has less to do with branching out into genres I haven’t yet explored and more to do with wanting the old and familiar to suddenly feel fresh and inspired. More zip? More zing? Is that what’s missing for me? I don’t know. What I do know is that my voracious appetite for reading is slowing down. I’m not alone. There are many out there like me, people who would rather read than sleep. Are they changing, too? Maybe the underlying cause is that I like a story with a no-holds-barred happy ending. In fact, I prefer it. I consciously seek that state of bliss in everything I do, every choice I make in life. That hasn’t always worked out so well for me, I’d like to point out, because it involves taking a lot of risks. But fa...
